Lofoten
The E10, the only road through the islands, and a few days to follow it. The forecast changed by the hour, and so did the light.
Haukland
The first morning, early. White sand, turquoise water, and weather that changed by the minute. I was out on the rocks at the far end of the beach, dodging the waves as they came in — one of them got me, and the camera gear only just survived.
Reine
The postcard, from the car park everyone shoots it from — some views are famous for a reason. The snow on the peaks had been there for months, and the cloud kept changing its mind about the light.
Setting out
A fishing boat heading out under the peak at nine in the morning. Late winter is skrei season in Lofoten — the cod come in from the Barents Sea to spawn, and every harbour empties at first light.
The lights
Pitch black on the shore below the golf course; without a headlamp there was nothing to see at all. Then the sky switched on, green from horizon to horizon, and the whole coast came back out of the dark. The glow in the west is not a sunset — it is the lights of the towns and villages along the coast.
